A female prison officer who made allegations of sexual discrimination has been awarded compensation for unfair dismissal after an out-of-court settlement.

Amit Kajla, who was described as “attractive”, made a successful claim against Her Majesty’s Prison Service (HMPS) at an employment tribunal in September last year. A remedy hearing had been scheduled to take place in Birmingham today.

However, the hearing was called off as injury solicitors representing Ms Kajla reached a settlement last night with HMPS. Details of the damages awarded were not revealed.

She took action against her former employers last July after resigning from her position at Brinsford Young Offenders Institution, near Wolverhampton.

Ms Kajla claimed that while working at Brinsford from July 2007 to May 2008 she was the victim of constant harassment and discrimination for being a young and attractive female, with the workplace being a mainly male environment.

The tribunal found last September that Ms Kajla, then aged 22, had been the victim of unfair dismissal, and upheld her claims of age and sex discrimination.

Her solicitor, Jaspal Singh, said: “The case has been settled for an undisclosed sum and Amit does not wish to comment at this time.”
