Phillip was off work for two and a half months, as he was left bleeding on the ground and later had to undergo surgery to his cheek and nose.
As well as both attackers being ordered to pay £2000 in compensation to Mr Dickens at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, they were also told they must undertake 250 hours of community service.
Sheriff Scott also stated clearly that the £2000 compensation had to come from their own pockets and asked the solicitors to make this clear to both their parents.
Sheriff James Scott told the pair: “It is a disgraceful, outrageous, that a member of the public, minding his own business, should be subject to hooliganism and then attacked. He was off work for two and a half months and was a man who served the community as a police officer.”
Later in the same court, 17 year-old Ryan pleaded guilty to maliciously kicking the car, and was fined £300.
