Criminal Injury

A middle-aged man who attended a top Catholic school has been awarded compensation after being abused by a priest who was subsequently imprisoned.

In the 1970’s the victim was molested by his teacher, Father William Green, on several occasions at St Bede’s College in Manchester.

The man, who no longer lives in the city and is now in his mid 40’s, has been awarded an out of court settlement of £15,000, with the Alexandra Park School.

Kim Harrison, acting as the man’s injury solicitor, described how it left him wracked with guilt and traumatised.

She said: “It had an impact on him as a young man. He was low, he couldn’t enjoy life at university and it affected his confidence at a time of life when most people are letting their hair down.

“He felt a sense of shame and, like many victims of this sort of crime, he felt if he had done something about his own abuse then maybe it would have stopped it happening to others.”

In October 2008, Fr Green was jailed for nine years for ‘systematically’ sexually abusing a string of boys at St Bede’s.

Judge Clement Goldstone at Manchester Crown Court told him: “You systematically and sexually abused these boys, who were vulnerable and impressionable, and they were groomed by you for the purposes of your own sexual gratification.”
