Personal Injuries

A jogger who was locked in a freezing cold public toilet on Christmas Day is set to receive compensation from the local council.

The man was wearing only his jogging gear and in order to keep warm he wrapped himself in bin liner and toilet paper, as well as using the hand-dryers to provide additional heat.

He was captured by CCTV cameras entering the Dulwich Park lavatories at around 4.30pm on Christmas Eve during his run.

An attendant then locked the door without checking if anyone was inside the building.

He was unable to call for help as he did not have a mobile phone with him. He was eventually freed at 9.30am on Christmas Day, but by then he had missed opening presents with his family.

After the man was released from the toilet he made a complaint and started a compensation claim against Southwark Council.

Bosses at Southwark Council promptly apologised to the jogger.

A spokesman said: “We have offered this man compensation. I cannot go into any detail because we are in negotiations and no figure has been agreed.”

Reportedly, the attendant involved was working on a temporary basis and is no longer employed by the council.

Councillor Linda Manchester said: “This is the first time anyone has been locked in the toilets.

“All our toilet buildings are checked every night before locking and so this should not have happened.

“The importance of making thorough checks of cubicles has been re-iterated to all members of the parks locking team.”
