Medical Negligence

The family of a 9-year-old boy who requires constant care after being deprived of oxygen in his mother’s womb have been awarded a substantial compensation payout.

Stephen Loraine was born in distress at Arrowe Park hospital on the Wirral after they failed to understand the medical records of his mother, Pauline Lorraine.

She was suffering from a fibroid which should have caused concern to doctors. A short time after being sent home following the scan which discovered the fibroid, she started to bleed.

Stephen’s delivery had to be rushed after Pauline was taken back to hospital.

He now suffers from quadriplegia and cerebral palsy, as a result of clinical negligence on the part of the hospital, according to the family.

Stephen also has problems with his sight and needs round-the-clock care.

A High Court decision in 2008 said that Pauline was wrongly sent home after the scan. After the birth of her son, she was forced to give up her work to look after him. Her husband Mark also provides a lot of assistance.

Mark stated: “This has been a long hard fight to secure Stephen’s long term care.”

The family already received an interim compensation payout which they used to adapt their home to fit Stephen’s needs.
