Medical Negligence

A young mum from Whitby whose daughter suffered a brain injury at birth is to take legal action against Scarborough Hospital for medical negligence.

According to the Whitby Gazette, Sara Harran claims that when she gave birth to her daughter Sienna two years ago, she received a level of care that she believes to be well below the required standard.

During the birth, baby Sienna’s heart stopped, forcing Ms Harran to undergo an emergency caesarean. Following the procedure, doctors said that Sienna had sustained a brain injury and that it was possible she also had cerebral palsy, though this hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Sienna was put onto a ventilator and at the time her survival rate was just 5 per cent. Two years later she has amazed the experts as she is proving capable of crawling.

Miss Haran said that Sienna was doing more than the doctors had ever expected, and that she was a ‘little miracle’.

Miss Haran said that she was disappointed with the poor level of care she received during labour and also with delays in physiotherapy for Sienna. She said that she felt abandoned by the NHS.

A spokesperson for the local NHS Trust sad that it would be inappropriate to comment on the case due to its complex nature and the fact that it is now in the hands of the solicitors.
