Road Traffic Accident

A lorry driver who suffered severe personal injuries when his vehicle toppled over in high winds has been awarded £86,000 in compensation.

The crash was caused by a gust of wind that threw the lorry on to its side. The 54-year-old became trapped inside the cab after suffering several injuries.

He sustained a shattered left wrist and his right ankle and shin were both snapped.

He also broke one of his legs, and suffered cuts across his right eye and multiple tears to his shoulder muscles.

He was stuck in the cab of the lorry for almost an hour while the emergency services attempted to cut him free from the wreckage.

To compensate him for his injuries and lost-work, Brian received an £86,000 out-of-court payout following the accident last year.

Brian, of Chester-le-Street, County Durham, said: “It’s been so traumatic for me since it all happened. I’m in pain all the time and there’s not one day that goes by where I’m not thinking about what happened.

“I never thought I would get to the stage where I needed to take tablets – I was always a fit bloke but now I take tablets all the time.

“This whole thing has sickened me and it’s ruined my life. I’m in a lot of pain in my right leg because of what happened.

“I will never work again as a result of my injuries but this was never about the money to me.”

His 52-year-old wife Susan, a home carer for the elderly, added: “This whole thing has been very, very hard. I’ve been working and then coming home and looking after Brian – it’s 24 hours-a-day.

“There’s no point in being angry over it though, that’s life and we just have to get on with it. All I want is for Brian to be happy.”
