The 28-year-old’s family decided to make a compensation claim due to the extent of Mr James’s injuries, and this week the District Court sanctioned a payout of $7.4 million.
During his ruling, Judge Robert Mazza said before the incident the victim had no serious health problems and it was hoped when he reached adulthood he would be able to work and live independently.
The accident shattered those dreams, and he now requires 24-hour care and oxygen tanks to help him breathe.
He also suffers with regular epileptic fits and the risk of him choking is severe.
The compensation awarded to will help pay for various expenses, including medical costs, carers and modifications to the family’s house.
