Radiographer Receives £3,000 for Accident at Work
Posted on Jun 30, 2009
A radiographer has received £3,000 in personal injury compensation after an accident at work left her with a broken ankle.
23 year old radiographer Kathryn Knight was injured at her workplace, the Bradford Royal Infirmary, in May 2008 when she was pulling a screen along a corridor in her department. As she pulled the screen, which is used to give hospital patients privacy, the wheels hit her left ankle and broke her ankle bone.
As a result of her injury, Miss Knight was off work for four weeks, while her ankle was in plaster, and was unable to enjoy her usual pastimes of running and horse-riding.
The radiographer had never been trained in moving these screens and so did not realise that they should be moved by pushing rather than pulling. Miss Knight commented:
"I feel I have had to learn the hard way when really I should have been provided with adequate training to avoid going through what has been a particularly painful injury."
After her accident, Miss Knight contacted her union, the Society of Radiographers, and it instructed its lawyers to pursue a claim for personal injury compensation on behalf of Miss Knight.
The case did not reach court. Miss Knight's employer, the Bradford Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, admitted liability and paid her £3,000 in an out-of-court settlement. Miss Knight's lawyer, Phil Kyte of Thompsons Solicitors, said about the case:
"A few seconds of instruction would have saved this client a lot of pain and time."
