Woman Wins Over $40,000 in Compensation for Clinic Rape
Posted on Jun 29, 2009
A woman who was drugged and raped at a Queensland medical centre has been awarded over $40,000 (Australian dollars) in criminal injury compensation by the Queensland Supreme Court.
The 27 year old woman, who cannot be named, attended the Beenleigh Medical Centre in September 2001 suffering with a severe migraine.
After a doctor refused to treat her migraine with morphine, the woman was left in a cubicle where she was given two injections, one of them morphine, by Nicholas Allan Carroll, a male nurse.
Once the woman was drugged, she was made to perform sexual acts, including oral sex.
According to The Brisbane Times, the woman claimed that the rape had had "devastating" consequences and that she was now dependent on anti-anxiety medication and sedatives. She has suffered depression, agoraphobia and panic attacks as a result of the rape and the judgement said that she "frequently washes her hands and mouth in response to traumatic memories of the assault" and that the attack has left her feeling "worthless, violated and like damaged goods."
Nicholas Allan Carroll, a 45 year old male nurse from Brisbane, has been jailed for five years for rape and for supplying a dangerous drug, and now the Queensland Supreme Court have ordered him to pay the rape victim $41,250 in criminal injury compensation.
