Footballer Awarded £4.3 million for Sport Injury

Posted on Jul 01, 2009

An 18 year old man is to be awarded £4.3 million in accident compensation after his promising career in football was cut short when his leg was broken during a game.

According to the BBC, the accident happened in 2003 when Ben Collett was playing for Manchester United's youth team.

During the reserve game, Mr Collett was tackled by Gary Smith, who was playing for Middlesbrough Football Club. The tackle resulted in Mr Collett breaking his leg and being unable to follow his dream of becoming a professional footballer.

In a previous court hearing, Mr Collett was awarded £4.3 million in compensation, but Middlesbrough FC challenged this award and appealed against it.

Lady Justice Smith and Lord Justice Carnwath have upheld the original court decision, ruling that the £4.3 million was not excessive for a "lost career".

Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager of Manchester United, had described Mr Collett's talent as "outstanding" during the original hearing and it was suggested at the time that Mr Collett could have earned up to £13,000 a week as a professional footballer until the age of 35.
